YIMBYs (yes in my back yard) of Northern Virginia will make housing affordable to all by enabling the development of more and denser housing. Attainable homes close to jobs, opportunities, and amenities of daily life enable communities to be more socially connected, economically productive, and sustainable, environmentally and otherwise.
An acute housing shortage is causing the affordability crisis. Zoning, inefficient permitting, and other restrictions have made housing a financial hardship for most people. This 2018 map shows roughly where the Capital region was zoned exclusively for detached single-family homes. Neighborhoods such as Del Ray, Fairlington, and Ballston show denser housing takes many forms suited to different needs. Allow more housing in every neighborhood, especially historically affluent and exclusionary neighborhoods, removing barriers to both subsidized affordable and market rate housing
Reform structures that incentivize communities to say no to new homes, including tax systems and car centric transportation systems.
Make housing permits fast and fair, removing arbitrary barriers to both subsidized affordable and market rate housing.
Enact policies that support current residents having stable housing choices amid growth.
Increase funding for subsidized affordable housing through a wide variety of mechanisms, including direct subsidies.
